Louder Than a Bomb is an annual youth poetry slam held in Chicago every spring. Founded in 2000 by Young Chicago Authors Artistic Director Kevin Coval and poet and former YCA Executive Director Anna Westof, it is now the largest youth slam in the world, with more than 70 teams competing in 2011.

The goal of the slam is to engage schools and community organizations from all over the Chicago area to not only share their stories, but listen to the voices of those from other parts of the city they would otherwise never hear. This friendly competition gathers the best and brightest young writers aged 13-19 from throughout the region, with the winners going on to represent Chicago at the national level.

Louder Than A Bomb is a safe space that emphasizes community building, education, and youth empowerment. By carrying on the rich tradition of oral storytelling and the spoken word, this competition historically engages more than 350 youth participants, representing more than 40 schools and community centers to share stories, break stereotypes, and speak the truth, challenging themselves and their audience.

?Kevin Coval is the author of ALA ?Book of the Year? finalist Slingshots: A Hip-Hop Poetica, as well as Everyday People and L-vis Lives! He is co-founder and Artistic Director of Louder Than a Bomb: The Chicago Teen Poetry Festival, subject of an award-winning documentary of the same name. A regular contributor to Chicago Public Radio and a four-time HBO Def Poet, Coval teaches at the School of the Art Institute and in high schools around Chicago.

Round and round, in and out, congestion and deficiency - these are the aspects of the chakras that need to be balanced. As you learn to examine the energy body through the chakra system, you will become more aware of your energetic needs and thus aim to restore the energy centers to homeostasis. Through specific movements, visualizations, and meditations, you can learn to cultivate and hone your awareness and balance your energetic field naturally. This class will meet for one hour each week and focus on one chakra at a time, beginning with the root and ending with the crown. Please wear comfortable clothing that allows for yoga movements. The class will offer introductory information, beginner to intermediate yoga style movements, and end with visualization & meditation on the chakra of the week. Pillows and mats are available at the center, but feel free to bring your own. Please call in your RSVP to OM at 402-345-5078; drop-ins are also welcome.Feb. 5 - DSL Edgework Workshop

Feb. 11 - Mirror Image Workshop
with Pete Starr
10am-4pm ? $60

MIRROR IMAGE is one of the newest, cutting-edge body/mind techniques in the world! Recently developed in the U.S., it has recently been introduced to the U.K. by its founder, Pete Starr.

Unlike other body/mind methods, MIRROR IMAGE blends special Chinese qigong (internal energy manipulation) routines with certain principles of body structure and movement that have been taken directly from ancient, traditional forms of Chinese martial arts and marries them with self-image psychology to assess and adjust your self-image. This will impact your overall health, relationships, how you perform at work or school, and your ability to reach your goals.

It is not simply a lecture; it is a hands-on, physical approach to the subject of self-image psychology that works.

If you can sit or stand, you can master the principles of MIRROR IMAGE and enjoy the many benefits it offers!

Pete Starr, Founder of the Mirror Image Technique, began martial arts training in judo in 1956, Starr soon became one of the first Americans to study kung-fu and was the only American student of Master W.C. Chen, one of China's premier martial arts masters. A practitioner of the Chinese martial arts for more than 50 years, he has authored four best-selling martial arts books (available at bookstores and on Amazon.com at Pete Starr Books, and as one of the foremost authorities on Chinese internal martial arts he regularly travels throughout the U.S. and Europe to teach seminars. Together with Dr. Maorong Jiang, Mr. Starr is authoring a book about the new Mirror Image technique.

Feb. 11 - OM Center Poetry Slam
7:30pm ? $7

What is a poetry Slam?
It's competition poetry; meaning humor, politics, enlightenment, sex, entertainment masquerading as literature, literature masquerading as entertainment. Poets will read, then judges will flash Olympic-style scoring to determine who goes on to the next round until there's just one poet left standing as the champion. It's a lot of fun!

Hosted by Matt Mason. Open mic starts at 7:30 followed by the featured performer and the slam; sign up BEFORE 7:30 as signup is limited and will only be allowed after 7:30 if less than 8 are in the slam.

This month's slam will feature Kait Rokowski.

Feb. 18 - aetherplough presents:
a dance performance by movement artist Shinichi Iova-Koga

8pm ? $10

Cellist April Faith-Slaker will accompany this performance.

Founded by Shinichi Iova-Koga in 1998, inkBoat is a performance collective working in fractured, filmic, delicate, and decayed environments. inkBoat?s performances evoke both the traditional and the experimental, drawing heavily from movements (political, artistic, personal) of challenge. Each performance is a dialogue between the apparent and hidden worlds.

Shinichi?s dance/theater/questioning process is informed by collaboration, whether with history, environment, gravity or fellow human beings.

Shinichi Iova-Koga and inkBoat are current artists in residence at ODC Theater in San Francisco.

Founded in 2008 by Susann Suprenant and Thom Sibbitt,
?therplough was formed in response to a need to create context for contemporary performance in Omaha. The three-fold mission - create, produce, present - is the group's invitation to Omaha area artists of all backgrounds and artists from around the country to explore Omaha as a rich site for contemporary performance.
