Tommy Heinsohn finalist for Basketball Hall of Fame as coach

Tommy Heinsohn has already been inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as a player.

Now, the 78-year-old Heinsohn is up for consideration to enter the Hall of Fame as a coach as well.

Heinsohn, who spent his entire playing and coaching careers with the Celtics, is one of 12 finalists for the Hall of Fame?s Class of 2013.

A committee of 24 will be picking the new members with an announcement to be made on April 8. Candidates need 18 votes to enter the Hall of Fame.

Heinsohn, who is the color commentator on Celtics? telecasts on Comcast SportsNet, went 427-263 while coaching from 1969-1978.

He replaced Bill Russell, who retired after the 1968-69 season, and was fired during the 1977-78 season.

Heinsohn guided the Celtics to championships in 1974 and 1976, beating the Milwaukee Bucks and the Phoenix Suns. His 427 wins are second in team history behind Red Auerbach, who had 795 victories.

A Holy Cross graduate, Heinsohn spent nine seasons playing for the Celtics, averaging 18.6 points and winning eight NBA championships.

Among the other candidates being considered for the Hall of Fame is Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who coached the Celtics from 1997-2001, and Gary Payton, who spent the 2004-05 season in Boston.
