Emergency Shelter and Supplies En Route to Aid Syrian Refugee Crisis

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox has sent emergency shelter and supplies for Syrian families living in the Domiz refugee camp in northern Iraq.

Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) October 19, 2012

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox has sent emergency shelter and supplies for Syrian families living in the Domiz refugee camp in northern Iraq.

As a result of Syria?s growing violence, sectarian tensions and economic hardship, a high influx of people have crossed the border into the Kurdistan region.

Reasons for their arrival are varied?some families are fleeing from conflict in Syria?s northern city, Aleppo; some are returning to their Kurdish roots; others have been displaced by the previous conflict in Iraq.

Many families have made their way to the Domiz refugee camp near Duhuk, approximately 60 kilometers from the Syria/Iraq border.

Approximately 3,000 families are living at the camp, with an average of 50 new families arriving each day.

ShelterBox, which responds to disasters such as earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict, has deployed a response team to deliver boxes of aid that will help families rebuild their lives.

?With winter fast approaching, the ShelterBoxes have been packed for refugee families in Domiz to provide them with warmth and comfort in the upcoming extreme conditions in the region,? said David Webber, who is leading the ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) deployed to the area.????

?Each box contains a disaster relief tent, extra thermal blankets and groundsheets, water filtration kits, hats, gloves and scarfs for adults and children, solar lamps and most critically, the thermal liner for the disaster relief tents.?

The thermal liner is the result of ongoing development of the equipment that ShelterBox delivers to families in need. It has been designed for use in extreme weather conditions and can be added between the inner and outer sheets of the tent for extra insulation.

The thermal layers were used for the first time during ShelterBox?s response to the earthquake that struck Turkey in October 2011 and provided extra warmth for displaced families.

The SRT will begin working with the Kurdish organization, Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF), to distribute aid to the most vulnerable families.

Elsewhere in the region, ShelterBox continues to explore opportunities to provide shelter for people in need. An SRT is due to travel to Jordan this weekend to assess aid distribution options and continue to work with local partners in Lebanon to find ways to supply relief to those most in need.

ShelterBox is also responding to flooding and ongoing conflict in the Sahel region of West Africa?part of its Clinton Global Initiative commitment, as well as widespread flooding in Pakistan.

Since 2000, ShelterBox has provided shelter, warmth and dignity following more than 180 disasters in over 80 countries. ShelterBox?s American affiliate, ShelterBox USA is headquartered in Sarasota, Florida. Individual tax-deductible donations to ShelterBox USA can be made at http://www.shelterboxusa.org, (941) 907-6036 or via text message by sending SHELTER to 20222 for a one-time $10 donation.
