VA Loan Limit Raised In Honolulu County | Hawaii ... - Hawaii Homes

Joe Schmitz, Loan Officer NMLS #222839, Mann Mortgage, LLC

On August 6, the VA Loan limit in Honolulu County was raised to $756,250.

What does this mean exactly?

It means VA has increased its guarantee to lenders in Honolulu County. This now allows us to offer high balance

VA loans up to the county limit of $756,250 with NO down payment. In addition, this decreases the down payment that is required of VA loan borrowers needing loans above the county limit.

How does a VA loan work that is over the county limit?

A VA Loan is guaranteed 25% by VA to the lender. In addition, when borrowing over the county limit the borrower can provide a similar guarantee in the form of equity. For example, a veteran who purchases a home for $856,250 would be $100,000 over the Honolulu County limit and would have to place a 25% down payment of $25,000. In addition, the VA funding fee cannot be financed.

What is the VA funding fee and how much is it?

The VA funding fee is charged by VA and used to finance the VA home loan program. The fee is affected by several factors, including reuse of VA Loan and type of service of the borrower, for example, active or reservist. A 5 to 10% down payment decreases the fee obligation. Disabled veterans are exempt from the funding fee obligation.

What is a VA certificate of eligibility and am I eligible?

The certificate is a document that VA issues to inform veterans and lenders whether they are eligible, how much entitlement remains, and what funding fee category they fall into. Both active duty and reservists can be eligible for a VA home loan. If you don?t have a current certificate of eligibility, you should request it, and as a VA-approved lender we can help you obtain it, often immediately.

What are the advantages of a VA Loan?

A VA loan enables a veteran to finance 100% of a property?s value with no money out of pocket and no mortgage insurance.

What about closing costs?

VA allows for a seller to pay all of your closings costs. In a situation where the seller is not providing any concessions, some VA approved lenders like us are able to give a lender credit to cover some or all of the closing costs.

What are non-allowable fees?

These are fees which cannot be paid by the veteran. Often, VA approved lenders like us will pay the non-allowable fees for our clients. It?s important for sellers to understand accepting a VA contract does-n?t necessarily mean cutting into their bottom line.

Interest rates on VA loans are often more competitive and more lenient on credit score requirements. A VA loan is one of the easiest loans to qualify for, making it possible for more and more veterans to own a home in the nation they?ve defended.

The VA loan even allows a seller to pay off the borrower?s debt.

Refinancing

A veteran in a VA loan can ?streamline refinance? with minimal documentation and sometimes no appraisal allowing them to take advantage of lower interest rates. Veterans can also refinance into their VA loan to save money on the interest rate, take cash out to pay off debt, or do home improvement.

What is the process of purchasing a home with a VA Loan?

First, you will want to get pre-approved by a VA lender. It?s important to work with someone knowledgeable about VA loans?someone you also trust and feel comfortable with. Communicate to your loan officer what you are able to pay monthly so they can translate this into a price range for a home. Also find out early in the process what types of properties are acceptable for VA financing. It?s also important that your Realtor and loan officer communicate.

Once you are in contract with a seller, it?s time to do your official loan application. Be sure the home inspection is completed prior to the appraisal. When the appraisal is turned in, the Notice of Value is issued which may include additional conditions.

When you receive final loan approval, your closing documents can be drawn and you?re on your way to the signing table. Typically your loan will fund the next day. Two days later recordation occurs and you are a home owner!

I?m always available to answer questions or to set up a free consultation for any of my fellow veterans and their families (808) 783-5815.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas | DirectBuy Home Improvement Blog

Remodeling the bathroom is a great way to give it a new look. Better yet, you can also add more functionality and convenience to this essential area of the house.

Upgrading Bathroom Fixtures

The toilet is one of the most heavily used fixtures in the bathroom. It is also one of the biggest users of water. An old toilet can use six or more gallons per flush. As part of Bathroom Design your bathroom remodeling, replace this fixture with a new, efficient one to save money on water and make the room look nicer. If your old toilet has a cracked tank or other problem, replacing it will remove that annoyance at the same time.

A good way to make an obvious improvement without making a huge investment in bathroom remodeling is to replace the faucets in the sink and shower. Old faucets can get worn, develop leaks or simply start looking dated. By replacing them with modern versions during bathroom remodeling, you eliminate the physical problems associated with old fixtures and reinvigorate the entire room.

Full bathroom remodeling goes much further than just getting rid of worn-out fixtures. Put in a new tub or shower to make the bathing experience refreshing instead of wearing. Try a Jacuzzi tub or handheld shower head for extra luxury.

Whole Bathroom Remodeling

To fully remodel a bathroom, you will need to do more than replace basic fixtures and upgrade the bathing area. Tear out the old tile and replace it with a fresh design. Choose a basic tile design if you want a timeless effect. When you do full bathroom remodeling, you can completely eliminate all of its old elements for an entirely new look.

If you want the room to be up to date on the latest trends, check home magazines for ideas on material and style. The only downside to a stylish bathroom is the potential for it to Bathroom Remodelingbecome dated. Expect to have to replace your flooring, fixtures and other design-sensitive elements every few years if you?re going for the modern look.

Refinish the Bathroom Walls

Bathroom remodeling includes putting a new finish on the walls. Thanks to the bathroom?s humidity, wallpaper is not a good choice for this. Instead, try semi-gloss paint. This paint?s finish is washable, yet is not so shiny as to be distracting.

Alternatively, use bathroom remodeling as an opportunity to eliminate the need to paint by installing tile. Most bathrooms use a combination of paint and tile on the walls, but you can easily tile over all vertical surfaces. This looks best if you can use an upscale form of tile such as large squares of marble. Marble tile can be made from fairly thick pieces. Veneers, however, provide the appearance of the stone without the weight. This can make stone veneers preferable for walls that aren?t strong enough to support a heavy stone coating.

Add New Cabinets to Your Bathroom Remodeling List

Renovate your bathroom?s appearance and add storage space by adding new cabinets. A towel cabinet ensures that you never have to go far to dry off after stepping out of the shower even if you forgot to put a new towel on the rack. Cabinets under the sink both hide the pipes and provide space to store your bathroom cleaning supplies. While experts recommend that you store medicine outside of the medicine cabinet, these handy metal boxes still provide a great place to put razors, toothpaste and other essentials.

If you already have cabinets, complete your bathroom remodeling by giving the existing ones a new finish or replacing their doors. They?ll look clean and up to date, and you?ll be spared the expense of buying a new set.

With these ideas, you should be able to remodel your bathroom so it looks like it?s brand new. By choosing options that can stand the test of time, you?ll be able to use your renovated bathroom for years before you need to remodel again.

Police race to find Ian Brady letter before his victim Keith's mother dies of cancer

WINNIE JOHNSON has never given up hope of finding her child, who was snatched by Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

POLICE are racing against time to find a letter which could reveal where Keith Bennett is buried before his mum
dies of cancer.

Winnie Johnson has never given up hope of finding her child, who was snatched by Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

She is seriously ill in a hospice and sources say she has ?days rather than weeks to live?.

Now Brady?s mental health advocate Jackie Powell, 49, has claimed she received a sealed envelope thought to contain details of Keith?s final resting place.

She said the 74-year-old killer insisted it could not be opened until after his death ? at which point, the contents should be passed to Winnie.

It is understood that Powell said she returned the letter to Brady.

Police arrested her on suspicion of preventing a lawful burial but she was later freed on bail.

Myra Hindley
Myra Hindley

Last night, officers were searching through hundreds of documents in a bid to find the letter, after it was claimed it existed ten years ago.

Yesterday, Powell?s former husband, Stephen Powell, 52, said he had known about the letter for the past decade.

He said: ?I did tell the authorities 10 years ago that this letter existed.?

Police have also searched Brady?s room at Ashworth Hospital in Merseyside, where he is said to keep a battered 1960s-style suitcase containing papers.

An insider said:?This case has become legendary amongst staff at Ashworth.

?A clinical liason member of staff was able to look in it but, incredible though it may seem, there was some rule that stopped police search teams seeing what was kept inside.

?Everybody was told that whatever is kept within the case will not be seen until after Brady?s death ? it was supposedly legal letters, documents and possibly even photographs.?

Police fear they may not find the letter before Winnie succumbs to her illness ? and some are sceptical it even exists.

A source said: ?We took everything from Powell?s house that wasn?t nailed down but so far, we have not found this letter. We may come across it in coming days but, if I had to make a bet, I would say there is a chance we may never find it.?

Officers decided not to upset Winnie by telling her of the new claims, although her son Alan, 56 ? Keith?s brother ? was informed.

Powell refused to comment on the case yesterday at her home in south Wales.

Speaking from an upstairs window she said: ?Just leave me alone. I don?t want to know.?

Winnie?s solicitor, John Ainley, said: ?Brady is very manipulative and wants a sense of power by retaining this information until after his death. The family find it hard to believe this letter exists.?

Men who consume more than 1.5 servings of pan-fried red meat per week are 40 percent at higher risk of developing prostate cancer, finds a research.

Mariana Stern from the Keck School of Medicine of USC, the lead researcher, also revealed that the study has provided important new evidence on how red meat and its cooking practices may put some people at the risk of getting the deadly disease.

"Red meat and poultry, cooking practices, genetic susceptibility and risk of prostate cancer," she said.

The research has found that cooking red meat at high temperatures may produce a potent chemical carcinogen, which triggers the cancer.

Researchers examined data from nearly 2,000 men who participated in the study. Study participants were asked to complete a comprehensive questionnaire that evaluated amount and type of meat intake, including poultry and processed red meat.

Besides this information regarding cooking practices was obtained using color photographs that displayed the level of doneness. More than 1,000 of the men, who were included in the study, were diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

"We found that men who ate more than 1.5 servings of pan-fried red meat per week increased their risk of advanced prostate cancer by 30 percent," Stern said.

"In addition, men who ate more than 2.5 servings of red meat cooked at high temperatures were 40 percent more likely to have advanced prostate cancer.

The team found that, hamburgers were linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer than steaks, especially among Hispanic men.

They also found that men with diets high in baked poultry had a lower risk of advanced prostate cancer, while consumption of pan-fried poultry was associated with increased risk.

Although, the researchers do not know why pan-frying poses a higher risk for prostate cancer, they suspect it is due to the formation of the DNA-damaging carcinogens-heterocyclic amines (HCAs)-during the cooking of red meat and poultry.

Besides these two, other carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are formed during the grilling or smoking of meat.

"The observations from this study alone are not enough to make any health recommendations, but given the few modifiable risk factors known for prostate cancer, the understanding of dietary factors and cooking methods are of high public health relevance," Stern added.

This study has been published in the journal Carcinogenesis.

High potency and synthetic marijuana pose real dangers in first weeks of pregnancy

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? Marijuana is up to 20 times more potent than it was 40 years ago and most pregnant women who use the drug are totally unaware that it could harm their unborn child before they even know they are pregnant.

Writing in the journal Drug Testing and Analysis, American researcher's state the argument that marijuana is a harmless drug is no longer valid due to the emergence of 'high potency' marijuana and synthetic marijuana which pose a potential real threat for pregnant women.

They also express concerns that marijuana's increased popularity among teenagers and young adults could put this group at higher risk.

"The emergence of bioengineered crops and novel, medicinal marijuana strains, means that marijuana is no longer what it used to be in the 1970's and early 1980s': some new, high potency strains, including some medicinal marijuana blends such as 'Connie Chung' and many others, contain up to 20 times more THC, the psychoactive constituent of marijuana, than did 'traditional' marijuana from the 1970's and early 1980's " explains co-author Dr. Delphine Psychoyos from the Center for Genetic and Environmental Medicine at Texas A&M University. "Furthermore, with the emergence of dispensaries and Internet websites, high potency marijuana and Spice products are now readily available to the general population."

Spice products, a prominent brand of 'synthetic marijuana', or 'fake weed' mixtures, contain extremely potent THC analogues, also called 'synthetic cannabinoids', such as AM694 (found in Euphoric Blends Big Band and others) and HU210 (found in Spice Gold), both of which are 500-600 times more potent than marijuana's THC.

"The THC contained in 'high potency' marijuana and the potent THC analogues contained in Spice products and other brands of 'synthetic marijuana', are potentially harmful to embryonic development, as early as two weeks after conception. This is because these psychoactive chemicals have the ability to interfere with the first stages in the formation of the brain of the fetus; this event occurs two weeks after conception, earlier than before signs of pregnancy appear. By the time a woman realises she is pregnant and stops taking these substances it may already be too late for her unborn child. "

"Given that marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug by pregnant women worldwide -- one study estimates the rate is as high as 20 per cent -- this is a major issue."

Recent research from the past 5 years has shown that marijuana exposure during pregnancy has been associated with anencephaly, a non-sustaining life condition where a large part of the skull or brain is absent, neurobehavioral deficiencies, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disabilities and memory impairment in toddlers and 10 year olds, as well as neuropsychiatric conditions, including depression, aggression and anxiety, in teens.

"The problem is that many women who are pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant are totally unaware of this increased potency and the risks they pose," says co-author Dr. Delphine Psychoyos. "This is because many websites on mothering and pregnancy, and those run by pro-marijuana advocacy groups, base their discussions on data collected prior to 1997, when no detrimental affects on pregnancy had been reported; It is important to note here that prior to 1997, pregnant women were mostly exposed to low potency, 'traditional' marijuana, which was the common form of marijuana in the market in the 1970's and early 1980's."

"Marijuana has regained its popularity from the 1970s, especially among teens and young people, and has established social and cultural status as the most popular drug of abuse. Yet, like pregnant women, these young users probably have no idea of the significant increase in potency over the past four decades. "

The researchers are calling for greater awareness among pregnant women about the availability of highly potent marijuana and synthetic cannabinoids such as those found in Spice products, and the risks that they can pose to their unborn child, even before their pregnancy has been confirmed.

They highlight the need to revise U.S. government bills and legislation to take account of the development of synthetic cannabinoids, such as those found in Spice and in new psychoactive substances that are based on cannabinoid research chemicals; They also question whether there is a need to put high potency marijuana in the highest category, if marijuana is to become legalised in America, based on its medical applications.

The authors also stress that teenagers and young people need to be more aware of the health risks of high potency marijuana, of synthetic cannabinoids found in Spice and other brands, and of synthetic cannabinoid research chemicals sold as designer drugs on various non DEA-regulated websites.

If you can plan your marketing budget to include a few professionally written and placed press releases, especially in the beginning, all the better. o So consider writing and submitting articles to editors of related business journals and local publications . They are often looking for articles from local businesses.

You?ll get your name, print as a credible source, Which has a lot more standing than any ad you can purchase in the same publication.

6 Network ? Network ? Network! Face-to-face networking is one of your best sources of advertising. Be sure to take advantage of every opportunity you can connection. Getting involved will get your business name out there. Become a member of the Chamber of Commerce and be on active participant. Joining a committee, going to meetings, networking breakfasts, special events and extends the opportunities to interact with prospective clients. Volunteer to join a local arts council, charity board, or school board. You?re not only servicing your community, you?re putting yourself and your business out in front of the public. 7th Assess and redirect Along the Way. Just because you have a written business plan does not mean you should shut your eyes to anything but what you have written. After several months of being fully operational, if you find your business is taking off in one area more then another, you may have stumbled onto a genuine need that was not being filled. Go with it! Assess and redirect. If you find your newspaper advertising is pulling more than your direct mail campaign it may be time to adjust the advertising budget. First, be very sure you?re not being too quick to judge. Some areas of business take longer than others to cultivate. Just as some advertising will adjust according to season, campaign, and frequency. id=?article-resource?> ??is president of MareMax Consulting, a full service advertising, marketing and website consulting firm, located in Southern New Jersey. LG says the Optimus Vu will hit the US this quarter

Optimus Vu

While none of the carriers in the U.S. have stepped forward, LG has said that the Optimus Vu (check out our review) will be destined for the United States market this quarter. This aligns rather well with the reports of a Verizon branded version, sporting Big Red's LTE radio bands and it's unique 4:3 aspect ratio.

With the limited release (primarily confined to Asian markets) the Vu hasn't made a significant splash in the Android pool. Dropping the Ice Cream Sandwich running 5-incher with digitized pen input on the Verizon network could change all that. Of course just because it's been seen and mentioned doesn't make it so (hello there, Verizon Nexus One!) so until we see it on some store shelves we still have to call it a bit of a rumor.

Hopefully, LG can push the Vu into the U.S. market, as more choices is always better than not having them.

Tommy Thompson Wins Wisconsin's GOP Senate Primary

In election-weary Wisconsin, a familiar face has emerged victorious.

Former governor, Health and Human Services Secretary, and momentary '08 presidential candidate Tommy Thompson won Wisconsin's Republican Senate primary, staving off three GOP rivals.

The result is a win for an established figure and a loss for tea partiers and free-market groups in Washington, D.C.

The usual suspects in conservative politics were divided sharply over the race. Former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann mounted a late charge reflected in polls, with backing from the Club for Growth, Tea Party Express, and Sen. Jim DeMint, whose Senate Conservatives Fund unveiled an ad for Neumann last week.

The three groups poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into the race over the last week, airing ads on TV and online and sending mailers in support of Neumann.

Throughout the race, polls showed Thompson and businessman Eric Hovde as the leaders, with Neumann surging late.

Hovde was endorsed by FreedomWorks, the small-government group headed by former House majority leader Dick Armey, and the Iowa-based free-market group American Future Fund, but he angered anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist by refusing to sign his pledge against voting for tax hikes.

Outside groups piled on Hovde, as Americans for Tax Reform ran phone calls against him, while the Club for Growth spent $339,000 and the 501(c)6 business group Americans for Job Security spent nearly $650,000 in the past two weeks airing ads that hit Hovde on taxes and sought to tie him to bailed out banks.

With 86 percent of precincts reporting, the Associated Press shows Thompson winning with 35 percent, Hovde in second with 30 percent, and Neumann trailing in third with 23 percent.

Neumann's loss is a blow to his Washington backers, but it would have been more severe had Hovde won, given that the Club for Growth reported spending $1.6 million to attack him.

Support for Paul Ryan and his budget was on full display in this race, as all three candidates supported the plan. Hovde aired a radio ad hailing its passage through the House, and Thompson forcefully promised to pass it if elected.

City's Clichy says banana thrown during Irish friendly

(Reuters) - Manchester City defender Gael Clichy said that a banana was thrown during a pre-season friendly away to Limerick on Sunday while the Irish club said the incident was under investigation.

"How sad to see "bananas thrown on the pitch" tonight," said the 27-year-old Frenchman on Twitter. "Knowing people around the world need food. No words for this."

City won the match at Thomond Park 4-0, their final game before their Community Shield match with Chelsea at Villa Park on August 12.

"The police and stadium officials are reviewing the CCTV recordings to attempt to identify an individual involved in the throwing of an offensive object onto the playing field," Limerick FC said in a statement.

"Any individual identified as being involved in an incident of this nature will be banned from future attendance and the matter will be handed over to the police.

"All those involved with the friendly game this evening fully condemn all forms of unacceptable behaviour of this nature."

Knight Capital gets $400 million rescue, shares tumble

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A group of investors rescued Knight Capital Group Inc in a $400 million deal that keeps the embattled leader in U.S. equities market-making in business, but comes at a huge cost to existing shareholders.

Chief Executive Tom "TJ" Joyce told Reuters the new investors supported him and his management team, but it was too early to tell whether the firm would shrink or keep the same strategy it had before last week's losses.

Yet there were immediate signs the rescue gave Knight back some of the market confidence it had lost, as two large brokerages resumed routing orders through the company and new data showed volumes picking up from last week's lows.

Blackstone Group LP, rival market maker Getco and financial services companies TD Ameritrade Holding Corp, Stifel Nicolaus, Jefferies Group Inc and Stephens Inc purchased preferred shares for what works out to be a 73 percent stake in the company, Knight said.

Knight was the largest U.S. provider of retail market-making in New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq-listed stocks, buying and selling shares for clients. It also provides liquidity to equity markets by stepping in to buy and sell stocks, using its own capital to ensure orderly activity.

Knight shares closed down 24.2 percent at $3.07. Those who held Knight shares before Monday will feel the pain of the company's rescue the most acutely. The massive dilution that accompanies the deal means their stakes are worth just a fraction of what they were days ago.

Roger Freeman, analyst at Barclays, said the dilution due to the new investment would imply Knight's value is about $1 a share. He has a $3 price target on the stock, but said it was too early to estimate how earnings would be affected in 2013.

BREAKUP COMING?

The rescuing companies will buy preferred stock convertible at $1.50 each with a 2 percent dividend to save Knight, which was brought to its knees last week by a software glitch that caused errant trading in dozens of stocks.

The preferred shares are convertible into about 267 million common shares, Knight said in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

"As a financial investment, Knight is a very valuable firm, but it needed liquidity and if it didn't have liquidity, a lot of that value was going to go away," Getco CEO Daniel Coleman told Reuters in an interview. "So we thought it was a pretty good bet that by providing liquidity we could preserve that value and perhaps increase it."

Stephens Inc Chief Operating Officer Curt Bradbury, in an interview, said he was long-time friends with Joyce and that his firm approached Knight in that vein on Friday. He said that while there may have been some negotiations by others on terms, Stephens was fine with the term sheet as it was presented.

As part of the deal, the investor group will take three board seats, with TD Ameritrade and Blackstone expected to get one each, a source familiar with the situation said, adding that details were still being worked out.

JP Morgan analyst Kenneth Worthington, in a client note after the initial reports of the rescue on Sunday night, said the deal presaged Knight's eventual breakup.

"We don't expect investors to value Knight as an ongoing entity given its technology glitch generated a pretax loss equal to (about) 30 percent of shareholders equity and nearly wiped out the company in just 30-45 minutes of trading," he said.

Worthington cited the reverse mortgage lender Urban Financial and foreign exchange platform Hotspot FX as assets that could draw interest, but Joyce said it was too soon to say what would happen to the firm's assets.

"Right now we kind of like our footprint and we will continue to execute on the strategy we had before the error took place, but as we kind of get back to business and do our annual budgeting and strategic reviews at the end of the year, that will be something that we will have to address," he said.

FUTURE STILL UNCERTAIN

The New York Stock Exchange said it would temporarily transfer Knight's market-making responsibilities on more than 500 stocks -- and related Knight employees -- to Chicago-based Getco, until the recapitalization is complete.

The NYSE consulted with securities regulators about transferring those responsibilities, according to people familiar with the matter, amid regulators' intense focus on ensuring the markets were not more broadly impacted. The sources declined to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Vanguard Group, one customer that pulled orders from Knight last week, said Monday it was again routing there, as did E*Trade Financial Corp.

But even if Knight has been saved for now, the company could face litigation from shareholders.

The potential liability could increase if it were found that Knight violated market rules. The top U.S. securities regulator said on Friday that government lawyers were trying to determine whether Knight violated a new rule designed to protect the markets from rogue algorithmic computer trading programs.

According to those people familiar with the matter, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro spoke with Joyce last Wednesday afternoon from her vacation spot in Maine. Joyce brought up rules on erroneous trades during the call and expressed hope for some flexibility. But Schapiro did not convey a view on it during the call.

Knight's problems started early Wednesday, when a software glitch flooded the NYSE with unintended orders for dozens of stocks, boosting some shares by more than 100 percent and leaving the company with the trading loss.

Knight's computers had been loaded with new software on Tuesday that was designed to accommodate a change on the NYSE, according to people familiar with the matter. When trading began, the computers poured orders into the market.

DAMAGE SWIFT

The damage to Knight was swift. Whereas Knight once accounted for 20 percent of the market-making activity in shares of Apple Inc, by midday Friday it was the market maker for 2 percent of the volume, according to Thomson Reuters AutEx.

But on Monday, AutEx data showed, that volume was back up to 19.4 percent, and it was on the rise for other stocks as well.

Barclays Capital's Freeman, in a note Monday, said he assumed that Knight's overall volumes in 2013 would be about 15 percent below where they were in the second quarter of 2012.

Sandler O'Neill + Partners and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz advised Knight Capital on the bailout. Barclays Plc advised TD Ameritrade on its investment.

(AP) ? Marlen Esparza was already having a tough time with her headgear when the crowd started booing her for refusing to trade haymakers with her Venezuelan opponent.

The way the women rocked the Olympic arena in their boxing debut almost made you forget for a moment how corrupt, inept and unsatisfying their male counterparts have been in way too many Olympics.

They moved, they danced, and they hit each other as hard as they could. What some of them may have lacked in technical ability they made up for with eagerness and desire, and thousands packed into the ExCel arena cheered their every move.

For years, women fought for the right to be punched in the face in search of Olympic glory. Now that they're here, they're threatening to make Olympic boxing a respectable sport once again.

It took a woman to do what used to be a man's job, with Esparza guaranteeing herself at least a bronze medal ? the first for any U.S. boxer in London ? with a 24-16 win over Karlha Magliocco of Venezuela on Monday. The diminutive former student body president from Houston did it on the biggest stage of her career despite having to constantly adjust her headgear because her hair kept pushing it off the top of her head.

Nothing a couple of left hooks to her opponent's head couldn't fix.

"If you keep thinking 'my hair, my hair' it messes with your aggressiveness," Esparza said.

At least she didn't have to worry about her makeup. Esparza has a deal with Cover Girl and puts on makeup before she goes into the ring and slips on her headgear.

Who says these boxers can't look good when they're fighting?

"I know the USA needed it badly, so I'm excited," Esparza said. "Now it's time to get what I really came here for."

That would be gold at 112 pounds, though Esparza must get through the reigning world champion from China in her next bout to get to the gold-medal final. Still, she and Claressa Shields, a 17-year-old from Flint, Mich., who also won Monday, have medals while nine of the 10 men on the U.S. team have already been eliminated.

In this Olympics, women rule.

"I definitely don't feel like I fight like a girl," Shields said. "I'm boxing out there. I just happen to hit hard."

Adding women's boxing to the Olympics wasn't well received in all quarters, particularly since it forced officials to eliminate one men's division to make room. The logic behind keeping the total number of boxers ? male and female ? at 286 while adding golf, of all things, to the next Olympics is more than questionable, but the IOC pretty much does what it wants.

In just two days, though, the women have re-energized a sport that almost got tossed out of the Olympics a few years back after a seemingly endless string of scandals destroyed what little integrity boxing still had. They fight hard, aren't afraid to get in a scrap, and don't complain like the men when a decision doesn't go their way.

A couple of them even wore skirts in their opening bouts simply because they wanted to, not because the dimwits that run amateur boxing followed through on an earlier plan to mandate them for all women.

The best of the bunch is a lightweight from Ireland who has won four world titles and will almost surely take gold here. Katie Taylor once was on her country's national soccer team and played Gaelic football, so no one questions her toughness. But her true calling is in the ring.

She showed it Monday, fighting almost nonstop for four rounds to beat Britain's Natasha Jones in a bout that was every bit as entertaining ? actually, even more ? than anything the men have put on in these games. While Taylor and Jones traded punches, several thousand fans cheered, sang, waved flags and made so much noise it was a wonder either fighter could hear the referee's commands.

"I think we're shocking the world this week," Taylor said. "People have really opened their eyes to women's boxing."

Count me among them. I was ringside when Christy Martin fought on Mike Tyson undercards, and I watched pinup Mia St. John fight her way onto the cover of Playboy. But women's boxing on the pro level was always more of a carnival sideshow to sell tickets than it was an actual competition, and fans have always pretty much treated it as that.

This is different. These are women who are real athletes with real Olympic dreams. They've trained in spartan gyms and sacrificed normal lives for a sport where most can't make a dime, all in a chase for Olympic medals.

And this is fun.

Taylor's two male cornermen were so excited when her victory was announced that they jumped and hugged each other. Fans in the stands were doing the same thing, giddy at the thought of a young woman fighting her way to what might be Ireland's only gold medal of the games.

They live for the moment, and for most of them the moment will be fleeting. Unlike the men, there is no real market for professional female fighters anymore, even if they come with gold medals dangling from their necks.

That may explain why they fight with such passion and exuberance. Someone is finally paying attention to them, and it will be a four long years before the spotlight comes their way again.

For the 23-year-old Esparza, this is her only chance. Raised by her father to fight, she is hanging up her gloves after the Olympics.

She's going to college, eager to pursue a degree in something other than the sweet science.

Hopefully not before she gets the fight of her life.

S.Korea's Jin in golden pistol shooting double

South Korea's Jin Jong-Oh completed an Olympic shooting double Sunday, winning the men's 50m pistol gold eight days after his triumph in the 10m air pistol.

The 32-year-old sharpshooter amassed 662 total points to lead a South Korean one-two ahead of Choi Young-Rae, who finished with 661.5 points in a competition decided on the final shot.

Jin's final effort pushed Choi into second place, with China's Wang Zhiwei taking bronze with 658.6 points.

"I am so happy," said Jin. "I never expected a gold medal. I'd hoped for a bronze."

Jin was lying in fifth place after the morning qualifying dominated by Choi, while world number one Damir Mikec of Serbia failed to earn a spot in the final as he finished 16th in the first phase.

Jin, winner of the 2008 50m pistol title at Beijing took his tally of Olympic gold medals to three, with two silver from the 10m air pistol at Beijing and 50m at Athens in 2004.

He became the first shooter to repeat as 50m pistol gold medallist.

Choi went into the final with a three-point lead. His advantage dwindled throughout the final phase until the last shot, when Jin's 10.2 points to Choi's 8.1.

"It was my worst shot, but I tried my best," Choi said. "And when I finished, I just felt relieved."

In the qualification round, five shooters finished tied on 559 and had to shoot-off for eighth and last berth in the finals.

They included Beijing bronze medallist Vladimir Isakov of Russian and world number two Matsuda Tomoyuki of Japan, who both lost out to Italian soldier Giuseppe Giordano.

The great things about my job isn't that I get to travel and do what I love to do, but also see first hand how a place puts its best face forward. But some places don't, particularly if you are, like me, a gay traveler. Gay Americans, (and Canadians, French, Swedes, etc.) tend to forget that we live in countries that, by and large, are exceptions to the rule when it comes to gay-friendly environments, and with this article, I am actually going to recommend places that gay travelers not visit. WASHINGTON -- House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) signaled Wednesday that despite recent setbacks, House Republican leaders will keep spending taxpayer dollars to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court. McCarthy, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) have been defending the federal ban on same-sex marriage since March 2011, when Attorney General Eric Holder deemed it unconstitutional and stopped defending it. They hired outside counsel to defend the law on behalf of the House of Representatives and, so far, have spent at least $742,000 doing so. And having voiced support for kind of that cornerstone of all civilization and all religions since the beginning of time, he then basically [is] getting crucified." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/01/sarah-palin-chick-fil-a-boycott_n_1727965.html?utm_hp_ref=gay-voices&ir=Gay+Voices&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009" target="_hplink">Read the full story here.</a>

  • Anti-Gay Pastor, Slams Jim Henson Company For Nixing Chick-Fil-A Toy Deal

A right-wing pastor and radio host slammed the Jim Henson Company for "taking the sodomy route" by severing a planned kids' meal partnership with Chick-fil-A over the restaurant chain's proclaimed anti-gay stance. As Right Wing Watch reports, Kevin Swanson of Generations with Vision -- who expressed nostalgia for a time when Christians "brought the death penalty upon homosexuality" -- spoke at length about the backlash against the Atlanta-based fast food chain. "A Christian perspective ultimately brought the death penalty upon homosexuality between roughly 350 AD and roughly 1850 or so, for about 1,500 years that form of life had pretty much been eliminated except here and there, it was in the closet, but it was almost unheard of for over 1,000 years, until recently," he proclaimed. "Of course, now you have a massive, massive increase in this kind of thing." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/31/kevin-swanson-anti-gay-pastor-jim-henson-chick-fil-a_n_1724744.html?utm_hp_ref=gay-voices&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009" target="_hplink">Read the full story here.</a>

  • New Jersey's Whitebriar Bed And Breakfast Slammed For Alleged Anti-Gay Facebook Post

A New Jersey-based bed and breakfast is taking the heat for allegedly penning a homophobic Facebook message to a local lesbian disappointed with the inn's proclaimed support of Chick-fil-A. As Jeremy Hooper of Good As You originally reported, Joianne Fraschilla took to Facebook to express her frustration with a sign displayed on the lawn of the Whitebriar Bed and Breakfast in Edgewater Park, which promoted "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," designated by former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee as Aug. 1. "This is somewhere my son loves to pass by and we have been excited to visit," Fraschilla, who is openly gay, wrote. "I'm sad to see a local business anti LGBT marriage." She likely wasn't prepared for the vicious, long-winded response her post received from Whitebriar Bed and Breakfast (called "Camp Whitebriar -- animals, organic gardens, Cooking from scratch & swimming" on Facebook). <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/31/new-jersey-whitebriar-bed-and-breakfast-gay-facebook-post_n_1724358.html?utm_hp_ref=gay-voices&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009" target="_hplink">Read the full story here.</a>

  • Pat Robertson: Democrats' Support For Gay Marriage Is Political 'Death Wish'

Right-wing televangelist Pat Robertson thinks Democrats are committing political suicide with their decision to stand up for the civil rights of the LGBT community. Speaking on his television program on Tuesday, Robertson said the Democratic Party has a "death wish" in backing marriage equality as part of its official platform, which will be unveiled at this summer's Democratic National Convention. "For the Democrats to go out on that limb, it just seems like to me that they are further alienating themselves from the mainstream of America," Robertson said. "If that's what they want to do, fine, but it will mean the death knell of their party, it seems like to me, and of course that's what they're doing but maybe they have a death wish." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/31/pat-robertson-gay-marriage_n_1725120.html?utm_hp_ref=gay-voices&ir=Gay+Voices&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009" target="_hplink">Read the full story here.</a>

  • Denver Baker Who Refused Wedding Cake To Gay Couple Defends His Stance

The owner of a Colorado-based bakery that denied a wedding cake to an engaged gay couple says he'd sooner shutter his business than "compromise" his beliefs. Jack Phillips, the owner of Lakewood's Masterpiece Cakeshop, told local CBS affilate KCNC-TV that he has no problem with lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) customers or staff members -- but nonetheless does not support gay marriage. "If it came to that point, we would close down the bakery before we would compromise our beliefs, so that may be what it comes to," Phillips said. "We'll see." <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/30/jack-phillips-denver-bakery-gay-couple-wedding-cake_n_1721093.html?utm_hp_ref=gay-voices&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009" target="_hplink">Read the full story here.</a>
