Amazon announces 7 and 89inch Kindle Fire HDs, pricing starts at $199

Amazon has made the jump from small to big screens with its e-readers in the past, and its now done so again with its tablets. The company has just announced a new Kindle Fire HD with an 8.9-inch, 1920 x 1200 display (or 254 ppi). The device measures 8.8mm thick and weighs in at 20 ounces, and that high-res screen has a polarizing filter on it that promises to cut down on glare -- the touch sensor is also laminated, which Amazon says offers better sharpness and contrast. As for internals, the Fire HD 8.9 (as Amazon has distinguished it) has a TI OMAP 4470 processor, dual speakers, a front-facing HD camera, and HDMI out. As Amazon is happy to point out, it's also the first tablet with dual-band (2.4GHz, 5GHz) MIMO technology, which Amazon says makes the device's WiFi 41 percent faster than the latest iPad. Look for it to run you $299 for the 16GB version when it starts shipping on November 20th. Those looking for some added connectivity will also be able to opt for a Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE for $499 (also shipping November 20th). That also buys you 32GB of storage instead of the standard 16GB, and you'll get 250MB of data per month from AT&T if you shell out an extra $50 a year.

But that's not all, Amazon has also announced a smaller, 7-inch Kindle Fire HD that will run you just $199 (also for 16GB). It apparently has most of the same specs as its larger counterpart, but we're still waiting for specifics. Pre-orders for all three options start today.

Wikipedia?s Jimmy Wales On British Government Snooping: ?Technologically Incompetent?

2112615614_c81e30326f_zDon't mess with Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia when it comes to Internet freedom, because he will use harsh words to lash out at you. Today, according to the BBC, Wales had some choice words for the British government and their snooping practices on citizens. Basically, he called them "technologically incompetent." Yikes. A quick bit of background here, the British government has been working on a "snooper's charter" which will track its citizens text and email use. Well that's wacky. He didn't stop at calling the proposed charter names, he says that Wikipedia would encrypt all of its connections with Britain if the UK moves forward with this.

Description: NASA/ARC has a requirement for Thirty-Two(32) voice communications system (VCS) hardware and software upgrade. ARC intends to award the contract as a sole-source requirement to: Simphonics Inc. 3226 N Falkenburg Rd Tampa, FL 33619 The requirement are as follows: 1.1Functionality and User Requirements 1.1.1System Configuration The vendor shall provide all software and licenses needed to support system administration, GUI and exercise development, voice recording and playback, DIS and VOIP conversion and communication, and any other maintenance or development functions. All software shall be compatible to our existing SimPhonics software and satisfy the original specifications for latency and functionality. The systems shall have the capability to run up to three(3) different exercises on the communications system simultaneously. An exercise is defined as two(2) or more VCS stations simulating all forms of voice communications necessary to accomplish the objectives of a FFC simulation experiment. Voice communication functionality includes, but is not limited to: two way radio communication (world based frequencies and effects) intercom and station-to-station dialup. 1.1.2Configurability The VCS shall be fully configurable with respect to selection of stations included in an exercise and the functionality of each station. Setup accomplished directly from a centralized administrative console using a user friendly GUI and locally from each station. The VCS must allow exercise and station configurations to be saved and restored in an efficient manner. There will be two(2) distinct GUI interfaces one for the controllers and one for the pseudo-pilots using the system. Each type of GUI interface will consist of no more than three(3) pages. Details of the user GUI pages (pictures of the desired screen layout and exact description of functionality) are attached. 1.1.3Interoperability The VCS shall provide network interoperability to affect voice communications with remote sites using DIS and VOIP network connectivity protocols. The DIS and VOIP interface must allow passing of all voice communications on all active radio frequencies and station-to-station dialup communications during an operational exercise. The VCS must also provide an intercom-like capability that allows voice communication within FFC and with external facilities during the simulation exercise or independent of the simulation exercise. 1.1.4Radio channel functionality Each communication station shall be able to select any or all of ten(10) radio channels as receive only or transmit/receive. There must be a visual indication of which channels are selected and in which mode they are operating. The user station display must indicate which channels are active and which are not. The user may select any or all channels using the touch screen and the GUI display. All incoming transmissions on all channels selected are mixed together and sent to the headset (s). Outgoing transmissions are received by all user stations configured for receive only or receive/transmit mode on the selected transmission frequency(ies). The volume for each station headset must be controllable from that station. Transmission is push to talk. All radio voice communications are in half duplex mode. 1.1.5Station to station dial-up functionality Any communication station shall be able dial another communication station directly from a touch screen in a simple manner (single button connect which button represents which station must be programmable). There must be audio and visual cues to the receiver that a station-to-station connection has been made. Either party can terminate the call. All other voice traffic is blocked from the headset of the initiating caller during the station-to-station call, and radio traffic on the selected frequency is shunted to a speaker. Communication over the station to station connection is full duplex with no need for PTT. The initiating station will hear the radio frequency communications of the called station in their headset during the call. The initiating station can use PTT to transmit out on their selected radio frequency during the station to station call. Station to station calls are private and do not affect transmit or receive on any station not participating in the call. 1.1.6Intercom The communication system shall provide a method of using an intercom-like feature to communicate within the facility and between FFC and outside facilities either coupled with or completely independent of the simulation exercise communications. Ten(10) channels of intercom must be provided. Intercom communications are to emulate a typical switched intercom system. The user selects an intercom channel using a pushbutton interface on the touch screen GUI. Only one channel is active at any time. All channels are full duplex with no need for dialup handshake or push to talk. Intercom connections are private and do not affect transmit or receive on any station not configured for intercom use. Audio recording capabilities ? The VCS shall provide the capability to select and record from any voice data stream (radio frequency, intercom or station to station dial-up). Channels to be recorded must be easily configurable at the beginning of each exercise. Voice data must be recorded in 16-bit mode at 44.1 Khz. Recorded voice data must be saved in an industry-standard PC audio format, such as WAV. The VCS must have a mechanism for playing back recorded files. Note:All radio frequency voice communications are in half duplex mode with separate transmit and receive data streams. The VCS must provide the ability to record and store transmit data streams separately from receive data streams for all radio frequency voice communications. This includes all voice communications initiated by an Air Traffic Controller on any radio frequency and voice communication initiated by all pseudo-pilots on any radio frequency. Intercom and station-to-station dialup voice communications are full duplex mode and only require recording of a single voice stream for each channel selected. 1.1.8Connection to existing hardware The vender shall provide PCs, keyboards and mice for each station. Touch screens, existing audio input cards, Comm Plug Panels, headsets, and foot switches will be provided by FFC. Specifications are provided in the Appendix. The communications system must supply phantom power to the headphones. 1.1.9Latency performance The VCS shall have a minimum 8K bits/s sample rate. The maximum delay between push to talk and audio injection should be less than 20 ms. System response to events like button pushes on the display screen and PTT switching should be less than 20 ms. Total VCS latency performance not to exceed 100 ms under maximum utilization. 1.1.10 System integration specifications The vendor shall provide the system requirements for cabling, power, etc. to FFC. 2.0Other Features 2.1Built in record capabilities Capacity shall be sufficient to record one(1) hour of communications. Recorded packets shall be time stamped. 2.2Phones to ramp controllers etc. Provide one modified telephone handset for connection to the VCS. 3.2Key initiation queue and simultaneous transmission warning indicators -Provide a VERY faint sound whenever an operator is keyed up or even just when they first key their mike. In the case of two simultaneous transmissions (?blocked calls?), those not transmitting should hear a squeal, just as in actual VHF/UHF radio transmission. 2.4Dual jack position override ? When two persons are plugged in at the same position, the person not talking must hear what the other person is saying through the headset. When the person plugged in to the right headset jack (instructor) transmits, it should override any transmission on the left jack and the left jack headset should hear what is being transmitted via the right jack. Transmissions from both jacks must be recorded 3.0Other items 3.1A minimum of one year warranty and support for all hardware and software delivered with the system. 3.2Any development software and all documentation required to operate and mai ntain the voice communication system shall be included in the procurement. 3.3Training for SimLabs staff on operations and maintenance for the system shall be listed as an option in the proposal. Offerors shall provide the information required by FAR 52.212-1 (FEB 2012), Instructions to Offerors-Commercial Items, which is incorporated by reference. Gadhafi's spy chief in Libyan hands

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Deposed Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi's notorious spy chief is in custody in Tripoli after extradition from Mauritania, Libya's premier said Wednesday, a step toward bringing the man linked to aircraft bombings and atrocities to justice.

A plane carrying Abdullah al-Senoussi landed in the afternoon at Metiga air base at the heart of Tripoli in the afternoon. From there he was flown by helicopter to the Hill Prison in the capital.

"Abdullah al-Senoussi will be have a fair trial according to international standards for human rights, the rights from which Libyans were deprived," Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib told reporters in Tripoli.

The former spy chief is accused of complicity in the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland, as well as the Abu Salim prison massacre of more than 1,200 inmates by Gadhafi's regime in 1996 and another airplane bombing in 1989.

Mauritania, Libya, the International Criminal Court and France all asked to try the former intelligence chief.

Libya and the ICC are embroiled in a similar dispute over where to try Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, known as the dictator's political heir apparent. He is being held by a militia in western Libya. The Libyan government said recently it would put him on trial there.

The Libyan official said al-Senoussi is being held together with other former regime members, including an ex-prime minister. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

A picture of al-Senoussi circulating on Libyan activists' social networking sites was apparently taken as he left the helicopter. It shows the dark-skinned man with a thick beard, appearing thinner than before. Behind him appears the Libyan chief of staff, Gen. Youssef al-Mangoush.

Bystanders chanted, of "the blood of the martyrs will not go in vain," as a video clip showed him leaving the helicopter and entering a black vehicle.

Al-Senoussi is Gadhafi's brother-in-law and was known as Gadhafi's "black box," a reference to his intimate knowledge of all aspects of Gadhafi's abuses. Gadhafi was overthrown last summer, then captured and killed by rebels in October.

Al-Senoussi was arrested in March at Mauritania's international airport, where he showed up disguised as a Tuareg chieftain, wearing flowing robes and a turban and traveling on a fake passport. For months, Mauritania resisted calls to hand him over, insisting that its laws were violated and that he should be tried there.

On Monday, a Libyan delegation including the finance and justice ministers arrived in Mauritania. The government handed al-Senoussi over to the Libyan minister of justice at the Mauritanian airport. A Libyan jet had been sent to fly the ex-spy chief home.

A baggage handler at the airport who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter said that al-Senoussi was not handcuffed when he was brought out. He said he looked healthy and in good spirits as he walked up the ramp to the plane.

However, Hassan Zaqlama, the Libyan finance minister, told Free Libya TV that al-Senoussi resisted getting into the plane but was forced to by security agents.

Al-Senoussi had spent his five-month incarceration in Mauritania in a private villa, the Libyan official said. He was allowed to exercise, watch TV, read the international media and receive visits from his nephew, said the official.

In May, he was indicted by a Mauritanian judge for "illegally entering Mauritania using false identity documents," after which he was sent to a public jail. It is not clear how he was transferred from jail to a private villa.

Oriane Maillet, a spokeswoman for the international tribunal in The Hague, said the court has received no information from Libyan authorities on the transfer of al-Senoussi, but stressed that an international arrest warrant has been issued for him based on ICC charges.

U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who led a delegation to the region, told reporters in Tripoli earlier this year that the U.S. had a "particular interest (in seeing him arrested) because of his role with the Lockerbie bombing."

The 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, killed 270 people.

France also lobbied for custody of al-Senoussi. He was one of six Libyans convicted in absentia and sentenced to life in prison in France for the 1989 bombing of a passenger jet over Niger that killed all 170 people on board, including 54 French citizens.
