(AP) ? Shawn Eichorst is leaving his job as athletic director at scandal-ridden Miami for Nebraska, where he accepted a five-year contract to succeed Tom Osborne and oversee the Cornhuskers' program.

The schools made simultaneous announcements on Thursday, and for Miami, Eichorst's departure comes at a particularly curious time ? both with the Hurricanes set to play Notre Dame in the rekindling of a huge college football rivalry on Saturday, and as the school braces to receive potentially crippling NCAA sanctions sometime in the coming months for compliance violations.

Former Maine athletic director Blake James will become the acting AD at Miami, filling the role that Eichorst held for just under 18 months.

"I am deeply disappointed in Shawn's departure to the University of Nebraska as I thoroughly enjoyed working with him," Miami president Donna Shalala said in a statement. "We wish Shawn and his wonderful family the very best at their new post."

Eichorst's starting salary at Nebraska will be $973,000 annually, believed to be a significant raise over his Miami deal. As a private school, the Hurricanes typically do not release contract information.

At Nebraska, the 75-year-old Osborne ? one of college football's legendary coaches ? announced late last month that he will retire Jan. 1 after five years on the job. He'll become athletic director emeritus and stay involved in department operations through July 30 at Nebraska, where he won 255 games and 13 conference titles as football coach.

Eichorst will start at Nebraska on Oct. 9, first as a special assistant to Chancellor Harvey Perlman, then assume Osborne's role on Jan. 1.

"I am humbled by both the responsibility and opportunities that lie ahead and I hope to carry on the rich tradition of Husker excellence set by Coach Osborne and so many others," Eichorst said in a statement released by Nebraska.

Eichorst has not spoken with Miami reporters in months, citing the ongoing NCAA investigation as the reason why requests were declined.

Eichorst was hired by the Hurricanes after serving as Wisconsin's Chief Operating Officer for athletics, overseeing a $90 million budget and being closely involved with a $100 million construction project for ice hockey, swimming and football. Eichorst was highly recommended for the Miami job by his one-time boss at Wisconsin, athletic director Barry Alvarez ? a close friend of Shalala.

Alvarez is also a graduate of Nebraska.

Eichorst arrived with Miami's athletic department in flux: Funds were being raised for facility upgrades, and the school was in the process of hiring a basketball coach to replace Frank Haith, eventually deciding on bringing in Jim Larranaga. Quietly, though, the Hurricanes were also under NCAA investigation over their compliance practices, which wound up overshadowing everything Eichorst did at Miami.

The story over Miami's NCAA mess broke publicly in August 2011, when claims made by former booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro ? now serving a 20-year prison term for his role in bilking investors out of $930 million ? were published by Yahoo Sports. Shapiro said he provided dozens of Miami athletes and recruits with impermissible benefits over an eight-year period starting in 2002.

The NCAA is expected to provide Miami with its notice of allegations later this year. Once that happens, sanctions typically follow in about 90 days.

Miami's athletic director for the period of some of those alleged violations was Kirby Hocutt, who left for Texas Tech last year. And now, the person who replaced him ? and vowed to help clean up the NCAA mess ? is also gone.

Eichorst was believed to be working closely with the NCAA during the joint inquiry into the athletic department, so his departure comes at a difficult time for both the department and the university, which is already dealing with a number of issues unrelated to the investigation, such as dwindling football attendance and major financial problems involving its highly touted medical school.

Eichorst addressed the scandal in a roundtable interview with Miami reporters on Nov. 1, 2011.

"I'm not making any excuses. I'm not asking anybody to feel sorry for me or anybody else," Eichorst said. "I've got a job to do and I'm only looking forward. I'm not looking backwards."

Now, he's looking at a new beginning.

"I was impressed with Shawn's credentials and experience but more importantly his respect for and appreciation of the tradition of the Nebraska Athletics program," Perlman said. "He expressed from the onset his hope to draw on the experience and knowledge of Tom Osborne and the rest of the current staff in working to continue the department's success both on and off the field."

India's Kingfisher Airlines halts flights for 3 days

7 hrs.

MUMBAI, India --?Kingfisher Airlines has grounded flights for at least three days after a violent strike over unpaid wages at the cash-strapped Indian carrier.

The company said late Monday that it was forced to declare a lockout after "unabated incidents of violence, criminal intimidation, assault" by disgruntled employees who have been intimidating their colleagues.

Flights will be halted at least through Thursday.

Chief executive Sanjay Aggarwal met with India's airline regulator Tuesday. After the meeting, he told reporters that Kingfisher would decide on Thursday whether to resume flights and said the airline planned to pay staff "in the next few days."

Aggarwal said half of Kingfisher's employees received their salary for March 2012, though he forfeited his. He did not comment on staff payments since then.

"I get the last check," he said.

The disruption is likely to hamper the money-losing carrier's efforts to attract much-needed new investment. Its share price plunged 4.8 percent Monday, bringing its slide for the year so far to 27 percent.

India's aviation minister, Ajit Singh, has warned Kingfisher over safety compliance since its engineers are on strike and said the company must keep at least five aircraft in its fleet flying in order to maintain its license, the Press Trust of India reported.

Kingfisher spokesman Prakash Mirpuri defended the airline's safety record and said it is not in danger of losing its license to operate.

"There is no threat to our operating license," he said by email Tuesday. "Our lock out follows violence by a section of employees. We have more than sufficient pilots and engineers to operate safely. However, they are being prevented from coming to work and hence the action."

Kingfisher is operating 12 aircraft in its fleet, Mirpuri said. That's down from 66 in March 2011, according to Kingfisher's annual report.

Kingfisher posted a loss of 6.5 billion rupees ($124.0 million) in the quarter ending June. Its total debt as of March 2012 was 87.3 billion rupees ($1.7 billion), according to FactSet, a financial information provider.?

Researchers discover gene that causes deafness

Monday, October 1, 2012

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have found a new genetic mutation responsible for deafness and hearing loss associated with Usher syndrome type 1.

These findings, published in the Sept. 30 advance online edition of the journal Nature Genetics, could help researchers develop new therapeutic targets for those at risk for this syndrome.

Partners in the study included the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Kentucky.

Usher syndrome is a genetic defect that causes deafness, night-blindness and a loss of peripheral vision through the progressive degeneration of the retina.

"In this study, researchers were able to pinpoint the gene which caused deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 as well as deafness that is not associated with the syndrome through the genetic analysis of 57 humans from Pakistan and Turkey," says Zubair Ahmed, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is the lead investigator on this study.

Ahmed says that a protein, called CIB2, which binds to calcium within a cell, is associated with deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 and non-syndromic hearing loss.

"To date, mutations affecting CIB2 are the most common and prevalent genetic cause of non-syndromic hearing loss in Pakistan," he says. "However, we have also found another mutation of the protein that contributes to deafness in Turkish populations.

"In animal models, CIB2 is found in the mechanosensory stereocilia of the inner ear?hair cells, which respond to fluid motion and allow hearing and balance, and in retinal photoreceptor cells, which convert light into electrical signals in the eye, making it possible to see," says Saima Riazuddin, PhD, assistant professor in UC's department of otolaryngology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is co-lead investigator on the study.

Researchers found that CIB2 staining is often brighter at shorter row stereocilia tips than the neighboring stereocilia of a longer row, where it may be involved in calcium signaling that regulates mechano-electrical transduction, a process by which the ear converts mechanical energy?or energy of motion?into a form of energy that the brain can recognize as sound.

"With this knowledge, we are one step closer to understanding the mechanism of mechano-electrical transduction and possibly finding a genetic target to prevent non-syndromic deafness as well as that associated with Usher syndrome type 1," Ahmed says.

Novartis's smokers' cough treatment gets European nod

TRIPOLI/BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - Hundreds of Libyans handed in weapons left over from last year's war on Saturday, part of a drive by the North African country to rid its streets of arms and crack down on rogue militia groups. As the day went on, a trickle of people turned into longer lines in Tripoli and in the eastern city of Benghazi, where tents were set up in squares for military officials to collect arms, explosives and even rocket propelled grenade launchers. ...

Textbooks Create Debt

The promise that was made by Baby Boomers to Generations X and Y, flatly stating ?College Degrees=Good-Paying Careers?, is no longer valid. This is evidenced by the stubborn unemployment rate, the Occupy?movements and continuing legislation which is aimed at reducing the repayment obligations of students for the first few years out of college (e.g. Higher Education Opportunity Act; College Cost Reduction and Access Act).

According to the?National Center for Education Statistics?approximately 39% of all undergraduates were receiving financial aid in the form of student loans in 2008.? The average amount received in the academic year 2007-2008 was $9,100.? Approximately 47% of all undergrads were receiving some form of aid in 2007-2008, the average amount being $6,600.? (Note: this does not include loans which parents take out on behalf of students.)

Taking a look at costs, it is easy to see where a large chunk of that borrowed money is going ??textbooks.? The average cost of a textbook varies depending on year-published and subject-matter.? The median range of annual textbook costs are reported in numerous sources as being $700-$1,100, including the 2008 Washington Post?special report?entitled "Break on Cost of Textbooks Unlikely Before Last Bell".? Some quick number crunching: $4,000 = total textbook cost over undergraduate years; 7% = student loan interest; 5 years=repayment period.

Estimating these numbers a student would have to pay $81.30/month for 5 years to simply pay for his or her textbooks.??This does not even touch on the actual cost of education yet.

My research into McGraw-Hill and Pearson, utilizing search results of Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, McGraw-Hill's and Pearson's Course Catalogs (2011), produced similar results, depending on your major.? Below is the average cost of a textbook.? The same textbooks were used across all three services (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and the retail price):

Science (Data)?

  • Barnes and Noble (online): $155.05?
  • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $177.44

Mathematics (Data)?

  • Barnes and Noble (online): $149.23?
  • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $165.10?

Humanities (Data)?

  • Barnes and Noble: $79.30?
  • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $92.28?

Please keep in mind that my numbers reflect new textbooks only.? If you are lucky enough to snag used textbooks before they are sold out, or if you are lucky enough to have a professor who does not constantly insist on the newest version available, then costs would be lower. Reducing textbook costs would make a remarkable difference to a student who needs financial aid.? Many options exist: renting textbooks, used books, e-textbooks and some even consider not buying the textbook an option.? It is time to use these options keeping the student in mind.? Textbooks do create more debt -- but they don't have to.?
